Are You Nooked?

Wow, I must admit, the new Barnes and Noble Nook has “Nooked” me! I love the ability to read from this new technology device, and one of the reasons I chose the Nook was the ability to add other document formats to read. I now add my PDF files I want to read and or Word documents I’ve created that I need to proof at a later time. It’s easy, fun and a GREAT way to always have information with you in one small compact device. Yes, I must admit, I’m Nooked!

Are You a Daily Skype User?

Are you using Skype? I’ve been using Skype for a year or so but have finally discovered the power of Skype when my wife and I visited France this past week. Every day we were able to talk and see our daughters and other family members half way around the world in an amazing way. The video and audio were almost always in sync, and the ability to have a visual face of our loved ones while we were anxiously telling them about our trip is beyond my wildest imagination.

As a professional speaker and trainer I find myself traveling a lot, and with Skype my wife and I can still have our morning coffee together and enjoy a visit even if it’s long distance and via this new telecommunicating medium.

Most people have heard of Skype, so why all the hype for a blog? First, I think Skype is probably one of the best new technology innovations we have and yet many people are not taking full advantage of it. In Europe, real estate professionals have their Skype name on their business cards and use it more frequently than their cell phones. Years ago when I got my first Yahoo Instant Messenger account it was so cool to talk to people through that tiny chat box, and in the early years it was all done through typing. Skype allows you to text, talk by audio only or audio and video. You can even join calls and have more than one person on for the audio portion of a conference call. For multiple video conferencing there is a cool program called oovoo. www.oovoo.com

I have begun telling my students from my classes what my Skype name is and that if they have a question to visit me on Skype so we can talk and resolve any technology issues they might have after I’m gone. It’s a GREAT tool that I think everyone should embrace and use on a daily basis.

Is RSS Dead?

It’s funny, a lot of the “Geek” technology podcasts I listen to want to declare RSS as dead. If you’re unclear on what RSS is, go to CommonCraft and watch their video explaining the concept, because it makes sense to me. I personally don’t think RSS is dead, and I still use it daily to gather and find new information on topics and news I’m interested in. However, the geeks do have a point about where you can find and get useful information today. Social Media! Unfortunately, most real estate professionals are not using social media to help grow their businesses or gain new information and marketing ideas. Remember, I said “most,” not everyone. Many agents today are still sharing lots of cyber gifts, posting funny videos and playing those infamous games on social media sites like Facebook. That’s okay, and I think we should all have a little downtime and fun, but social media can play such and integral role in how you learn and gather information today. Take for example FriendFeed. Sure, it’s a little complicated to learn, but once you discover the power with this social media web site it becomes a real source of gathering information from people all over the world who have similar interests with you. For brokers and managers, it’s a great way to monitor your agents and follow what they’re doing on some of their social media web sites. Check it out, it’s cool! Active Rain is another excellent web site for real estate professionals to read and watch what’s working for other real estate professionals around the U.S.

So the question I asked earlier, is RSS dead? I don’t think so, but with a combination of using Social Media with the right tools like RSS, you can save time, learn a lot, and have fun!
